Learning Disabilities/Dyslexia

Learning disabilities affect your child’s ability to learn and enjoy school. It is vital to get an early diagnosis and implement effective intervention programs and strategies. A full Educational Assessment is the first step.

Cognitive and achievement tests will assist you and your child’s teachers to make informed decisions about your child’s learning needs within the classroom.

The cognitive assessment will pinpoint any learning difficulties such as processing speed, auditory processing, verbal learning issues or non verbal learning issues.

The achievement test will assess reading, writing, spelling, mathematics and oral language.

You will receive a comprehensive report including specific teaching and learning recommendations.

Learning Disabilities Assessment Includes:

  • WISC-IV – Australian – Ages: 6 to 16 years 11 months.

OR

  • WPPSI-III -Australian – Ages: 2 years 6 months to 7 years 3 months.

AND

  • WIAT-II (Australian) – Ages: 4 years to 85 years.

It may also include:

  • Woodcock Johnson – III Diagnostic Reading Battery (WJ- III) –  Ages 2 to 80+ years
  • Auditory Processing Skills – Third Edition (TAPS -3) –  Ages: 4 to 18 years
  • Rey Complex Figure Test and Recognition Trial (RCRT) –  Ages: 6 to 90 years

For a learning disability to be diagnosed your child must display an average or average IQ and be significantly below average on one or several aspects of an achievement test (e.g. usually in spelling , reading or mathematics).

However, research based definitions into learning disabilities tend to have veered away from a discrepancy between intellect and achievement, and instead have focused on low achievement, with poor response to intervention.

Some researchers even believe that learning disabilities are due to poor education. It is generally accepted that dyslexia is a neurological disorder, with genetic origins, which interferes with the acquisition and processing of language.
